Southwark is the lead London borough on planning the Mayflower 400 celebrations and part of the international Mayflower Compact, a partnership of 13 destinations that have come together to develop a programme of activities to mark 2020. Our vision is to celebrate the anniversary of the Mayflower by increasing tourism to Southwark and Rotherhithe, encouraging cultural activity and ensuring that our young people know about the importance of the Mayflower and its legacy.
This community-led project will illuminate specific elements of six historic buildings. These buildings all fall within a small but historically very significant area of Rotherhithe, where Christopher Jones, the Master and part owner of the Mayflower lived, died and is buried.
Thames Alive celebrate and promote the River Thames by harnessing its many activities and attractions as dynamic assets for London and the country as a whole. Recent and regular river events prove that the Thames captures the public’s imagination, but they also demonstrate that a specific and coordinated effort is necessary to create synergy.
