About The Event

Charting the Mayflower is a major cultural project culminating in a large scale public performance for the 400th anniversary of the famous voyage. The London Bubble Theatre will open up powerful conversations about our roots and develop our knowledge of one of the most famous journeys in history.

The project begins with gathering stories, objects, facts and testimonies, both past and present about the Mayflower in the communities of North Southwark. This will shape public workshops and events - a community inquiry - before a public performance involving staking out and packing the ship, performing the shanties and occupying the ship with passengers, plants, seeds and animals.

The London Bubble Theatre are currently looking for volunteers to help explore the history and contemporary resonances of the Mayflower, to share it with the wider community in North Southwark, where the ship departed from the river’s edge in Rotherhithe. Organisers want to find out about the life and times of the passengers on board the Mayflower. Why did they leave? How did they travel? And how does this history relate to current stories of migration?
